PLANT POWERED SKIN FOOD
Updated: 2 days ago
A lot happened in the last couple of months. I was asked by Fig Fleurs in Pointe-Claire Village to have a pop-up store in their beautiful flower studio on November 30. The soaps I made for this event sold really well, so I ended up not having enough stock to offer them via my newsletter.
On February 5, I was invited by Linda Sestock from the Montreal Lakeshore University Women’s Club (MLUWC) as a speaker at one of their networking evenings to talk about handmade plant powered skincare and how I reconcile personal values with creativity. It was a really fun evening! The MLUWC is a really good non-profit organization in the West Island of Montreal with a focus on community, non-partisan advocacy and is fundraising for scholarships for women and girls. Check them out here https://www.mluwc.com.
Making new soaps took me a little longer this time as I wanted to try different soap design techniques and colouring with different botanicals and clays. Some of them turned out well and others I would need to practice some more. My diploma course in organic skincare formulation took much more of my time as there is so much to learn and I had to realize that formulating skincare products is really time consuming.
Talking about time consuming LOL, I decided I wanted to try something different for some of the packaging but didn’t have coloured paper, so I decided to dye my own paper. It ties in with my personal goal of reducing my footprint and working with plant powered ingredients (and it’s fun to experiment with). I am using paper and botanicals I already have like avocado peels and pits, pomegranate peel, onion peel, beets and elderberries.
One last subject I would like to touch upon is the importance of reading labels when you are purchasing cosmetic products! Please, please, please make it a habit to read labels! It will be better for your health and the environment. DO NOT trust the word “natural” written on the front of the package! If you don’t understand the ingredient list or are not sure about certain ingredients you can install and use an application on your phone called THINK DIRTY. Here are two another websites you can consult: https://www.ewg.org and http://www.cosdna.com
Avoid anything that has 'fragrance' or 'parfum' as an ingredient - this could include a whole host of ingredients to create a certain smell, but it's not broken down into the actual ingredients that create that particular smell.
Also, Ingredients are listed by those in the greatest amounts first, with the rest following in descending order. This doesn’t apply to ingredients that are present in concentrations that are less than 1%. They don't have to be listed in a particular order.
It’s also important to remember that just because an ingredient isn’t at the top of the list, it doesn’t mean it isn’t important. Some ingredients are very effective in smaller concentrations.
I hope this newsletter finds all of you well,
For anybody who hasn’t ordered from me before I would like to just quickly explain how it works.
I would like to make sure that you know that making soaps and cosmetics is NOT a business for me, it is a self -sustaining passion! I started making the products for myself because I don’t trust the cosmetic industry and prefer knowing what is in my skincare products and where the ingredients are coming form. Also as a personal goal I am trying to reduce my footprint. I started that many years ago with my food by trying to eat as clean and as local as possible. As a bonus I find this also to be a very creative and educating process.
You can email me email@example.com or call/text me 438-824-6972 to order or arrange to meet at my home in Beaconsfield to see, touch and smell the products first before buying.
